Episode 16 Say this, not that ... 3
Hello folks!
I’m back with another episode of Say this, not that… All of today’s examples are instances of L1 interference and two of them are caused by false friends. We’ll be remedying the expression “to go on the streets”. Then we’ll examine overthink vs. re-think as these have two very different meanings and my native speaker of English mind has an alarming response to the use of overthink in instances which call for re-think. Listen in to find out what that response is! And finally we’ll be reviewing actually vs. currently.
As always, if we are to remedy all of these L1 interference errors and avoid false friends, we’re going to have to work together. Do correct these errors if you find yourself or your pupils making them. As you know repeated correction is the only way to avoid fossilisation.
If you can think of any words or expressions that you think should be included in a future episode of say this, not that…, let me know in the comments below!
